The most coveted prize in British and Irish music was awarded to South London rapper Dave. The 21-year old rapper – whose full name is David Orobosa Omoregie – won the 2019 Hyundai Mercury prize for his debut album, Psychodrama. Announcing the winner, judge Annie Mac said the album “showed remarkable levels of musicianship, true artistry, courage, honesty. And it is simply exceptional.”

The talented rapper explores family and identity in Psychodrama. Supported by the singles Black, Streatham, Location and Disaster the album is framed as a therapy session, and covers his brother’s incarceration, prison reform and the diversity of the black experience.
Dave was presented with his well deserved £25,000 prize at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith, London.
