DJ Remi Burgz is one of many Black women taking over the airwaves at BBC 1xtra

The now-former Reprezent radio DJ, Remi Burgz, will be hosting  ‘Weekend Breakfast’ [7am-11am] on BBC 1xtra from Saturday, 30th of January.

She will be joining a wave of other black women-led shows on BBC including Lady Leshurr, Sian Anderson and Nadia Jae. After a year where the audio format has grown more prominent with Black audiences- podcasts, Clubhouse app and the rise of No Signal radio (where Remi has also featured) – it’s no surprise that Black women are earning more spaces in the industry.

Remi Burgz kicked off her career as an afrobeats DJ and event host in 2017 and hosted a much-loved show on Reprezent radio. Since then she has been booked and busy. She has made appearances at international festivals such as Stormzy’s #Merky fest in Ibiza and Afronation in Ghana, as well as popular event brands closer to home including the women-only LICK and DLT brunch. She has a passion for giving a platform for rising talent but hasn’t shied away from interviewing big industry stars such as Tiwa Savage and Olamide.

The afrobeats lover matches her favourite genre, with a bubbly, non-stop energy and a hard to replicate approachable vibe. It’s a big step for her to move from the youth-led Brixton radio station to her own slot on the BBC but as usual, her vibe is positive. “I’m excited, I’m dancing, I’m tun’in up, I’m grateful…I’m feeling a lot of emotions. Set your alarms! We’re going to create so many fun memories.”

We can’t wait to see how the ‘local energy provider’ makes her debut as the UK’s wakeup call every weekend morning!
