There’s no guessing where Stormzy will take his #Merky empire next. With a record label, clothing merchandise, and music festival under his belt, he has just announced a partnership with Penguin Random House. Stormzy is setting up a new publishing imprint called #Merky books that’ll focus on new works by young writers.
Earlier this year Stormzy signed a joint venture deal partnering his #Merky label with Atlantic Records UK. In February 2017 Stormzy released his debut album, Gang Signs & Prayer independently via #Merky with distribution from Warner Music Group’s ADA division. This new venture signals Stormzy’s ambition to leave an imprint on British Culture far beyond his musical genius. His legacy will now include providing other young talented writers with a voice in what is an oversaturated and difficult to enter publishing landscape.
In his Instagram post announcing the new endeavour he wrote:
“We will be using this as a platform for young writers to become published authors. I know too many talented writers that don’t always have an outlet or a means to get their work seen and hopefully #Merky Books can now be a reference point for them to say ‘I can be an author’ and for that to be a realistic and achievable goal.”
The first book to kick off the imprint will be Stormzy’s very own new book, ‘Rise Up: The #Merky Story So Far’. The book is due out November 1st and is available to pre-order now via Amazon. According to Penguin, the book features “never-before-seen photographs, annotated lyrics and contributions from those closest to him.”
We can’t wait to see where Stormzy takes his empire next!
